The works are known for their extremely chromatic idiom. This cycle of motets is said to have been given as a personal gift to Albrecht V. of Bavaria, Lassus' employer, after his arrival in Munich. By the time he had begun work in Germany, Lassus had already enjoyed great success in Italy as a composer for Costantino Castrioto. Carmina chromatico quae audis modulata tenore. Orlande de Lassus. By 1563 Lassus had been appointed maestro di cappella, succeeding Ludwig Daser in the post. Lassus remained in the service of Albrecht V and his heir, Wilhelm V, for the rest of his life. By the 1560s Lassus had become quite famous, and composers began to go to Munich to study with him. Choral Music. Lassus - Prophetiae Sibyllarum & Missa Amor ecco colei - The Brabant Ensemble. Sacred music. Orlande de Lassus was an undisputed master of all the vocal genres of the late Renaissance, from German lied to Latin mass. He was extraordinarily prolific, and this recording features the glorious polyphony of the Missa Amor ecco colei and Prophetiae Sibyllarum, two of his most celebrated works. The very opening of the Prophetiae Sibyllarum is enough to make the listener prick up his ears as de Lassus out-Gesualdos Gesualdo with the most astonishingly adventurous sequence of chord changes which both unsettles and intrigues. Hans Ludwig Hirsch is the founder of M√ľnchener Vokalsolisten and Florilegium Musicum. He is also director of the Ensemble Accademia Claudio Monteverdi. Orlande de Lassus's prolific output is home turf to the Brabant Ensemble, who specialise in the music of 16th-century Flanders. In his splendidly detailed sleeve notes, the group's director, Stephen Rice, makes a point of pressing Lassus's case for recognition at the expense of contemporaries such as Palestrina. In the 16th century, Rice maintains, Lassus was more famous than his Italian counterpart, and it is only owing to the subsequent academic focus on Palestrinia's counterpoint that the Flemish composer's reputation has been eclipsed.
