Englabörn is Jóhanns first solo album. It is derived from music he wrote for an Icelandic play of the same name. For the CD release on Touch, the music was revised and restructured to make it stand as a work on its own and not simply function as a collection of cues. The music is written for string quartet, piano, organ, glockenspiel and percussion. These elements were processed and manipulated, adding delicate electronic backgrounds to the otherwise entirely acoustic recordings. One song, Odi et Amo, is a setting of Catullus famous poem. Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson Icelandic pronunciation: 19 September 1969 9 February 2018 was an Icelandic composer who wrote music for a wide array of media including theatre, dance, television, and films. His work is stylised by its blending of traditional orchestration with contemporary electronic elements. Jóhann released solo albums from 2002 onward. In 2016, he signed with Deutsche Grammophon, through which he released his last solo album, Orphée. Some of his works in film. Album 2018 27 Songs. Englaborn launched the career of late Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson and has now become the masterwork that caps it. First released in 2002, the album started off as the soundtrack to an Icelandic play, but quickly gained a life of its own, thanks to its emotional power and finely tuned, spare scoring. Jóhann Jóhannsson: Englabörn. Jóhann Jóhannsson originally composed Englabörn for a stage play by Hávar Sigurjónsson, yet the music on this 2002 CD is apparently completely detached from it any discussion of the music's use in the theater is precluded by the absence of dramaturgical liner notes. The Latin text by Catullus, Odi et amo, establishes conflict from the outset: I hate and love why I do, you may ask I don't know, but I feel it and it tears me apart. Sixteen years after his debut album 'Englabörn', and shortly before his untimely passing, Jóhann reimagined his inaugural work with this now very poignant release. He invited his friends Hildur Gudnadóttir, Ryuichi Sakamoto 坂本龍一, Alex Somers, Viktor Orri Arnason, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Paul Corley to each reinterpret pieces from the album, and created his own reworks featuring Francesco Donadello, Theatre of Voices and Víkingur Ólafsson. As planned and with the support of family, this record will be released on March 23rd through Deutsche Grammophon, along with a remaste.
