Hugh Mundell. The teenaged Hugh Mundell cut Africa Must Be Free by 1983 under the tutelage of the legendary producer Augustus Pablo in the mid-'70s, and had a Jamaican hit with the title track. Mundell's artlessly fervent singing is attractive far out of proportion to his technical skill. It's the sincerity and devotion in his voice that make successes of songs like Let's All Unite and My Mind - that and the rock-solid instrumental backing of Pablo's studio band, which at this time included bassist and trombonist Leroy Horsemouth Wallace and guit. Definitely pick up a copy if you're hesitant for more information, this is a must have and a very well done reissue. For some reason someone keep in pushing that the hidden track is an instrumental. It is actually a dub of Book of life with echoes, reverbs, guitar and keyboards getting in and out of the mix. Hugh Mundells debut album remains one of roots reggaes most revered and sought-after records. Featuring production by Augustus Pablo, it was engineered by Lee Scratch Perry, Errol Thompson, Philip Smart and Sylvan Morris and features several standards, including the title track, Lets All Unite and Jah Will Provide. Augustus was a cornerstone of the album. After meeting him, Mundell began to skip school to work on music with Pablos influence showing within the albums content which covers apartheid, unity and spiritualism.
